  • Why habit?

    Imaginary conversation with Rick:

You should track the number of days you have been surfing since retirement

    Why?

So you can beat the days surfer per month each year!

Why does it need to be an improvement or decline?

What would it matter if it does or doesn’t?

    It doesn’t

Maybe so you can see how far you’ve come from before retirement

    See above

You should be trying your best everyday regardless of the past

Your best could be an improvement in a skill or in self care or something else

Habit tracker makes you feel bad you missed a day or didn’t do as well as before.

What does it matter that yesterday, you did it too?

What does it matter that before yesterday, you did it a bunch of times too, if you didn’t do it today?

And if you didn’t do it today, should you try any more or less tomorrow because of it?

    Do your best

    Dear Heavenly Father,

Thank you for meeting me where I am

It doesn’t matter how I perform

There’s nothing I can do that You could not do better

You just want my effort in transforming my heart into something that is pleasing to You

  • Trust in the Sandwich Maker

Scenario: you get to have samples of 5 soups before ordering it. Only difference between each is salt level of none, low, medium, and “This is Salt Soup”.

There is likely going to be different people that prefer the differences.

The sandwich is a pre-chosen list of ingredients AND the proportion of it in each bite

Vs a plate is a pre-chosen list of ingredients, but the portions of each in each bite is up to you.

The good sandwiches are the ones that have the most experience of understanding the strengths/weaknesses of each ingredient. It could get nuanced and complicated real quick.

    That’s just a sandwich

    How do we get people??

  • Professional Sweet Potater

Man, I sure do cut these sweet potatoes slow

    Speed check

If I were a pro, it would go so much faster

    For why?

To have more time to do other things…like be with the Lord…!

Ok, well then spend a bunch of time focusing on becoming a professional so that you can save a little time to do a little more of other things…like spend time with the Lord.

Or invite God to be with you as you do it slowly

Speed leads to some waste of material sometimes. Is that necessary or worth it? Are you provided so abundantly, that you can afford to be wasteful? Does it honor God’s creation?

Maybe I’ll just be at my comfortable pace. The pace that I can still commune with the Lord…and not cut off a finger.

It’s like running. If a conversation cannot be comfortably upheld, the focus must be on the difficulty of the task at present
